Genre research: Thriller

The next blog my group and I decided to research was thriller. We decided to research this genre because thriller will aid towards that suspense, and provides a more interesting climax that we would like to ad in our film.

Common camera angles: A low angle shot is when the camera is positioned below the subject and is pointed upward. This angle can make the subject appear larger and more powerful, and can also create a sense of danger or menace. This type of shot is often used in thrillers to create a sense of fear or anxiety in the audience.

A high angle shot is the opposite of a low angle shot, and is when the camera is positioned above the subject and is pointed downward. This angle can make the subject appear smaller and less powerful, and can create a sense of vulnerability or weakness. This type of shot is often used in thrillers to create a sense of suspense or uncertainty.

Over-the-shoulder shots are when the camera is positioned behind and slightly above the shoulder of one character, and is pointed at the other character. This angle is commonly used in conversations between two characters, and can create a sense of intimacy or tension. This type of shot is often used in thrillers to create a sense of tension or unease in the audience.

Common sounds in thriller: One of the most common sounds is the use of suspenseful music, which is often used to create a sense of tension and unease in the audience. This can include music with a fast tempo and sudden changes in volume, as well as the use of dissonant chords and minor keys.

Another common sound in thrillers is the use of sound effects, such as footsteps, doors slamming, and objects being knocked over. These sounds can be used to create a sense of immediacy and to heighten the suspense in a scene.

Thrillers also often use diegetic sound, which is sound that comes from within the world of the film, such as dialogue and sound effects. This type of sound can be used to create a sense of realism and to make the audience feel like they are a part of the action.

Finally, sometimes the absence of sounds is really effective in the genre, silence can keep the audience on edge, or in suspense.

Common Mis-en-scene in thriller:

One common aspect of mis-en-scene in thrillers is the use of low key lighting, which is when the lighting is dim and concentrated on a small area of the frame. This type of lighting can create a sense of suspense and mystery, and can make the audience feel uneasy.

Props are objects that are used in film to help create a sense of realism and to support the story. In the thriller genre, props can be particularly important, as they can be used to create suspense and tension.

One common prop used in thrillers is weapons, such as guns, knives, and other objects that can be used to harm someone. The use of weapons can create a sense of danger and can make the audience feel uneasy.

Common editing used in thriller: One common editing technique used in thrillers is the use of quick cuts, which are when shots are edited together in rapid succession. This can create a sense of intensity and can make the action feel more chaotic and frenetic.

Thrillers also often use the technique of cross-cutting, which is when the editor alternates between two or more parallel actions. This can create a sense of tension and can make the audience feel like something is about to happen.

A dissolve is when one shot transitions into another by gradually fading out while the next shot fades in. This can create a sense of continuity and can be used to indicate the passage of time.

Example films in this genre: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009), Gone Girl (2014), The Departed (2006), The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Why we like this genre: our group likes this genre because this genre is one that tends to involve the audience the most, the audience is enveloped in the plot, the action, and the suspense and to have the audience involved in our film is what we want the most, for them to be in the shoes of our character.

Why this genre does not appeal to us: Although this genre does have its positives, thriller films tend to require expensive props and costly elements like explosions, car wrecks and other suspenseful climaxes, although we do not have the fundings or budget, our group will try to re-create these scenes will as much realism as possible.
