Our research for the music video.
Our song for the music video project is "It Was a Good Day," By Ice Cube. This genre of Old School rap hols its own use of Camera angles, Mis-en Scenes, Sound, and editing that help form it into its own genre. Other songs that are similar that we researched are, "Still" by Dr. Dre, and "I Got 5 On It" by Luniz.
Camera Angles, and Movements:
Many camera angles are used in the making of an old school rap music video.
1. In our research, we found that many eye-level angles are used to show the artist talking, or rapping to the camera.
2. Next, low angles are used to show the artist looking down on the camera, as they dance or rap
3. Wide shots are used to show groups of people in sometime a mob, to get the meaning of a message, or match the lyrics in an old school rap song.
4. Tilts are used in old school rap music videos.
5. Finally, close ups are are an important movement that is used in this genre because it shows the audience how the subject can sometimes feel dazzed or confused when something important happens in the music videos.
sound
1. scores are used and are typically the old school rap song that the music video is based upon.
2. Sometimes, old school rap videos contain an intro, which is typically dialogue before the song starts
.
3.voice overs are also used when the subject is talking over the song in old school rap music videos.
4. ambient sounds are used but are usually simple, they can range form a police siren, to a crown cheering, these ambient sounds usually last around 1-2 seconds.
Mis-En-Scene
1. Costumes- Since costumes in old school videos usually are black outfits, that is what we will wear for the music video.
2. Props- Our props will include pagers, vehicles, prop guns, and sometimes cups or bottles.
3. Lighting- The lighting in old school music videos are dark since they take place at night, and street lights are usually present.
4. Makeup- Makeup is usually not worn other then light eye mascara worn by women.
editing
1. Usually light editing is present, cuts between shots and scene separate the film.
2. dissolving is used at the end of old school rap music videos as an outro.
3. A fade, specifically in the end of a music video shows hat the music video is ending.
4. rarely in old school rap videos, sometimes cross cutting is used, to show or highlight actions that lead up to the current situation in the video.
