"9" the short film versus "9" the movie comparison.
Short film:
My first impression of this short film was a bit strange. I felt like the post-apocalyptic earth with mechanical creatures and animals made the film have a strange sci-fi feel. However, the meaning behind the plot regarding humans and machines, or what makes people alike in certain ways was shown when the other eight rag dolls emerged from the dead. The lack of speech or diction in this film also aided towards the meaning behind his film in regards to what makes us all alike. It is also cool to learn and relate to a character without even hearing them talk. Conventions used are an abundance of low and high angles, to show the antagonists power over 9, yet also eyeline shots are used to show emotion in such characters.
Full length film:
The full length film had much more character development, we were able to better understand who the characters were and how the emotional vulnerability aided towards the plot of the film. In the full film, the ragdoll seems to be more on a mission than an adventure. He must find eight other robots to solve the mystery behind why the planet was destroyed. We also learn the back round behind the robot antagonist, created by a human scientists. This lays external meaning to the film, the people sometimes create their biggest fear. We also learn a lot about each robot (1-9), with more time in this film we are able to connect with each character, to better compare their similarity to 9 and the other robots. A greater variety of angles are used in this film, from low angles, high angles, eyeline shots, over the shoulder shots. We also see dynamic in editing, with a better quality CGI film, the film flows better and uses fades and dissolves that aid towards the film.
Comparison:
Both films had aspects that aided towards the purpose or plot, and meaning of it, however the full length film was better able to accomplish this task. Character development in the full length film allowed the film to explore the history behind the destruction of the earth, and the similarity between the robots that aided towards the connected to human life today. The short film only explored the persona of the main character, without connecting it to the other characters. Furthermore, a clear and descriptive story line is use through the full length film that we simply don't et through the short film. Important details bout how this situation happened in the first place was missing rom the short film and left the story somewhat unanswered, or missing something. The full length film adequately answered all f our questions and completed the full story. Therefore for these reasons, we feel that the full length film was better, and contributed towards the purpose to a further extent. Both films also had the same conventions, however the full length film expanded on diversity in shots, ad editing techniques.
