Title design research: (thriller)
1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film? Which ones?
Throughout the 3 minute and 30 second video, the video showed 32 titles scenes. This opening was more like an end credit, it included the producer companies, actors, producers, directors, etc. At the end of the title scene it showed "Splice" with the letters enlarged and held for a few seconds. The camera looked like it was going through the body of something and along the way titles would transition in and slowly fade and a new title was coming in.
2. What connotations do the images carry? (how do they make you feel)
The title sequences first contains images of many different x-rays with titles in every other picture. After, it is like a camera quickly moving through the body of what seems like a snake, very closely and quickly. You can't really tell what it is to be exact but if i were to make a guess it would be a snake as there were scales peeling and when it peeled back and moved inside there were veins like on the inside of a body. It makes me feel unsafe because I cannot really tell what is going on, the music in the back was like creepy classical music, often used in thrillers and horror movies.
3. How is the genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset? (Can you tell what genre the film is)
The genre is reinforced through the fact that the music is creepy and you can't really tell what is going on. It makes you clueless and question things because you're just lost the whole time until the plot starts to come in. It keeps you on your toes and you don't really know what to expect next. The music in the back is the type in horror movies that would slowly play when something creepy is happening.
4. What conventions are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?
To start, it is important to note the audience that would be interested in this film. The cover picture looks like a doll split down the middle and the name of the movie is "Splice", you can't exactly assume what this movie is about by looking at it like that. You would have to watch the trailer which is meant to rope people in. Curious people are the type to watch thrillers because they point is to be thrilled with the movie, this includes surprises and leads on curiosity.
